JULY 2007

from Dary

Q: Hi, Johnny! I want to know what is the relation between you and Brian Joubert? Are you friends?   Thanks.

A: Brian and I are competitors. He lives in France and I live in America. It's hard to be friends with people across the ocean, but we get along and he's a kind person. I can say I like him. I really respect his skating and his mental toughness.

from Amy H.

Q: Dear Johnny: I really love you and your skating. If you had a chance to buy a car, what make would you choose? Also, what is your favourite dinner? Love you, Amy

A: I want a Bentley Continental in the worst way, but the price is so outrageous I doubt I'll ever get one. My favorite dinner is probably filet mignon.

from Andy

Q: Johnny, we all adore you as a skater, and it breaks our hearts that you are never "ON" at Worlds. Do you commit to training 100% for Worlds? Do you really CARE if you win Worlds? It is getting disheartening watching someone with your level of talent go to Worlds every year and just pooping on the ice. Do you want to go down in history as the "Anna Kournikova" of figure skating?????

A: I don't want to continue my level of results. I want to improve them. I certainly don't want to have a reputation as the most talented one that didn't work hard enough or want it bad enough. I hope people will see a new Johnny Weir this season. I want to be more serious and I'm striving for that so people like you don't have to be "disheartened."

from Lauren

Q: Hey Johnny--- do you plan on attending the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver??

A: I plan on winning them.

from Cathie

Q: Is there anywhere I can listen to or buy 'Child of Nazareth'? It is so beautiful.

A: I believe you can listen to the music on the website of Maxime Rodriguez. He made the music for me so it isn't possible to purchase it. I have the only copies. I think it's beautiful music too.

from Colette

Q: Johnny, what is your definition of integrity? Who do you think embodies it?

A: Integrity can be displayed in many ways. When someone fights or stands beside something they think is right or wrong, when someone can lose gracefully, when someone can tell someone else "good job," when someone can be classy against all odds, when someone can admit defeat and when someone can say "I was wrong" or "I can't." All of these instances mean integrity to me. The person who instantly comes to mind in my sport is Michelle Kwan.

from Cinzia

Q: Hi Johnny! I congratulate you on your performance at the Worlds. Unfortunately I couldn't see the short program, but you deserved much more than the 8th position. I'd like to know what is your opinion about the final results.

A: I think my result at the Worlds was justified. In a different Q&A I said I didn't think I should lose to someone else and I made a bad statement about them and mathematics. I didn't research before I made the statement and that was stupid. :) Oops. In general the boys skated well at Worlds, but I don't know how I lost to Jeffrey Buttle in the free program. I may have made mistakes, but I didn't fall as much as he did. Another funny result of the new IJS...

from Mary

Q: I agree with you about the media....it is nice to win....but skating a clean program...or standing out...like you do....with a creative and exciting program is where it is at!  We are fans because we recognize & appreciate your talent! Don't let the rivalry hype bother you....because you are what you are...an incredibly beautiful & talented skater!

A: Thank you. The "Rivalry" isn't a constant thing for me. If I'm asked a question I will answer it, but if not then I don't have anything to say about Evan which is who I think you're referring to. I could honestly care less, but if you want to know something, I'll tell you, or if he attacks me in an interview, I'll fire right back. I think anyone would act the same.

from Taylor

Q: Who is your favorite friend you compete against. Do you have many? Good luck on and off the rink!

A: I have many acquaintances who I compete against. I wouldn't say I'm close friends with any of them. My favorite ones to compete against are the ones who support me, obviously. Tomas Verner, Sergei Dobrin and Sergei Voronov come to mind, as well as Evgeny Plushenko. They wish me luck and I wish them luck. Ryan Bradley is also very supportive of his competitors.

from Kristin

Q: I just want you to know how much I appreciate your skating style and ability. So many skaters look like they are "trying" to get through the program. You seem to get lost in the music and your performance is a moving piece of art. When I have downtime, one of my favorite things to do is to pop in an old tape of you skating...thank you for your gift of continuing to skate after the Olympics. I hope that you continue on as long as possible. I live in Maryland and would love to watch you practice. Do you mind spectators watching you work?

A: Thank you. I usually don't like when people come to watch me practice. I don't go to anyone's office and watch them type on the computer. Training is very exposed and naked, competition is almost fake in comparison. I have also had a lot of security issues with people who try to "find" me, so in general I get uneasy with it. So as much as I'd like to invite everyone to come see me practice, it's just not that way.

from Mariko

Q: Hello Johnny, you tried a new style to reinvent yourself in this season. What did you learn from it? Do you think that it was successful? I love your skating. I hope you will accomplish great things in your efforts.

A: I think my "Reinvention" was a flop. I was tired, uninspired and sad for most of last season so it was hard to have the gusto to pursue anything. The only time I can remember actually enjoying a performance last season was in Boston at a made for TV performance where I skated to "The Swan." I want to enjoy competing and performing again and I think all the changes I made will help.

from Ana

Q: Hi Johnny! Just one question- after the free skate at worlds, you said a lot of positive and optimistic things; were you having a harder time of it than it seemed/you let on? The best of luck to you.

A: I was. Worlds was a difficult time because I was juggling a lot of thoughts and ideas in my head and how to change my coaching situation and just to be happy with my life. Sometimes smiling for the camera is hard, but I was honest about everything. I was so happy that hell of a season was over and I could refocus myself.

from Alex

Q: Johnny! I really love ur skating and I know u love Russia. So, have u got any friends among russian figure skaters?

A: It seems the majority of my skating friends are Russian!

from Yuka

Q: Hi Johnny! If you were to choose one choreographer among Nikolai Morozov, David Wilson and Kurt Browning, whom you'd like to have make your program?

A: Nikolai Morozov. I don't like the programs of David Wilson or Kurt Browning. I prefer Nikolai's style because it is similar to Tarasova. I don't know if I would use Nikolai though because he has so many of my competitors.

from Iris

Q: Hi Johnny! You have a lot fans but there are a lot of people who hate you and criticize you harshly. However you are still so strong against them. How can you achieve that?   Thanks :)

A: I do have a lot of fans around the world, but with the good comes the bad. When you're in the public eye it's expected to have haters and lovers so to speak. I can stay tough about it because I don't care about the haters.

from Aysha

Q: Hi Johnny! First off, I love you and your style of skating. My question is; having been friends with Tanith Belbin for a while, do you feel weird hanging out with her now because of her relationship with Evan, since you and he are rivals? I hope not, because she seems like a really fun and nice person and I don't understand why they're together but whatever. Anyway you are a much better skater than Evan, always have been, always will be and I hope their relationship isn't getting in the way of your friendship with her.

A: I was a little shocked about their situation when I realized what was going on last year, but it's fine. Tanith is a chameleon and can change her personality to match her boyfriend or friends. She's always been like that, not exactly in a bad way, unless I don't like her boyfriend. It's not really my business what she and Evan do, but I do wish she acted the way she did a few years ago. In general we're still cordial.

from Somebody

Q: Are you married?

A: How much would it shock people of I suddenly came out as a closeted married man? Yeah, I have a wife and seven kids. Haha.

from Sandy

Q: I know that Evgeni is your idol and all but I like to ask you. What is your reaction to Evgeni returning next year?

A: I am ready to fight with him for results. I think it's good for skating that he'll make a comeback and I support his decision.

from Zed

Q: Hi Johnny! First, I would like to let you know that my best friend is absolutely in love with you. Second, I would like to know: what do you think about the high prevalence of eating disorders and eating disordered behavior in certain competitive sports such as ballet and, more specifically, figure skating?

A: This answer probably won't make anyone happy, but it's the truth. In figure skating, gymnastics, ballet and so on, every pound counts. I think most skaters male and female are very aware of their weight and often diet to achieve maximum results. I think in general, 75% of athletes have some kind of eating disorder, and not just skaters. To be in top physical condition, sometimes we have to starve ourselves. Some people even make themselves throw up or use laxatives, and that is their way of achieving what they want. I don't understand that, but I know I myself, have often gone a day or two without eating to get my weight down and make it easier to jump. It would be considered an eating disorder but to me it's normal because it's part of getting in shape. I am a bit jaded about eating disorders because I'm always around them so my answer may not be the most warm and fuzzy. I think at times, yes, people take it too far and it's horrible, but to athletes in sports where aesthetics mean a lot, it's important to be slim and have a lithe physique. I'm sure there are other skaters who disagree with me, but it's my opinion that everyone has some level of disorder, and it's a terrible thing when someone abuses it and they turn into a skeleton, but you have to be strong. I would love to say, that's all a rumor, but that's not the truth.

from Anna

Q: Hey! Well I'm not a major fan, but I have a couple questions for you :). 1. Who is you favorite Canadian Skater? 2. Was it hard for you to start skating at such a late age?

A: I've never actually been a big fan of any Canadian skaters. I did enjoy watching the technique of Sale/Pelletier though. It was hard to start skating late because of the sheer fact that for a while I was older then everyone I skated with, but to me everything was normal. Getting a double axel in two weeks is normal because I did it.

from Tatiana

Q: Hi, Johnny! I just came from the Champions on Ice show in Chicago. It was awesome like always. You all did such a great job!!! I LOVED the number you did with Melissa and Denis!!! it was without a doubt the most beautiful thing that I have ever seen on ice! Whose idea was that? What was the reason behind choosing particularly you three? Whose choreography was that? Who designed the costumes? lol sorry for so many questions.... one more... did you have anything to do with Marina Anissina and Gwendal Piezerat's choice of music? ;) Thanks a lot and good luck in the next season! Tatiana <3

A: The "Fallen Angels" was a great idea the three of us came up with and bounced it off a few people. We blended really well on the ice and off the ice and it was such a thrill for me to perform with Melissa and Denis. Denis did the choreography and a woman in Russia designed the costumes. I was really happy with it. We're currently thinking of music to create two new numbers! I was so happy last year when Marina told me she wanted to skate to Christina Aguilera. I gave her all the CDs and sang to her and she was crazy about Christina and her music. I was delighted when she and Gwendal showed up with such a fun program. I'm glad I passed on the Aguilera love to a red headed Russian diva like Marina.

from carmen

Q: Johnny - I must say that you rock. I have never been the slightest bit interested in or aware of ice skating on any level. I happened to watch the "fallen angels" video on the internet and, let me tell you, I am your new, most ardent fan!  You are an amazing, graceful, balletic, artistic, and athletic skater. You have me mesmerized with your amazing talent! How do you remain light-hearted and positive with all the negativity and criticism surrounding your sexuality and life-style? You are so young and so well-adjusted and so nice.  luv ya!

A: Criticism and negativity are expected. I don't think everyone will or should agree with what I say, who I sleep with, or the way I act. The fact that I understand that makes it easier to deal with.

from Emily

Q: It was a couple months ago but how did that make you feel when you either saw or learned the guy (I forget his name) it was on Nancy Kerrigan's world of skating count down to nationals that he was trashing you. I was shocked and mad when I learned it, you never deserved it.

A: I was very well supported by my fans and even people who aren't my fans. You don't rip someone apart just for fun. I don't know that man, and he doesn't know me so I don't know how he thinks he knows the inside story about me. He didn't even know the correct name for my music I was told. It's all bull.  From what I've heard from people who do know him it's just that he's bitter he never was an ice princess himself, always just a hanger-on. I was shocked when I heard it was on a show hosted by Nancy Kerrigan. With all that woman has been through, calling Mickey Mouse corny, getting her knee bashed, you'd think she would have known what criticism feels like and tried to make Mr. Lund stop bashing me. She didn't. She giggled along with the other hosts. That is hurtful to me because she's been there and didn't do anything. I can say I have no support for her show, her network, or television ambitions.

from Emily

Q: Are you currently in a relationship?

A: I am single.

from Rex

Q: Hi Johnny...you are a very entertaining personality, I'll say that. Regarding Paris Hilton - at one point you've said that you admire her and are a fan. Given her recent troubles and jail term, do you still consider her a role model?

A: I have never considered her a role model. I just appreciate that she is strong enough to be herself, and be famous for doing nothing. I applaud people who can put it all out there. At this point, I'm more worried about Lindsay Lohan.

from Marcia

Q: Hi Johnny, We saw you perform in the COI on May 26 at the Honda Center in Anaheim, and we wanted to know what music you used when you performed with Melissa and Denis in that wonderful program. The COI music page doesn't list that particular piece. You are always a joy to watch. Thank you.

A: Melissa, Denis and I used a piece called "Sarabande Suite" produced by Yoav Goren for Globus. Yoav has actually made my music for the free program this season too.

from Melinda

Q: Hey I have a question! :) What was the hardest test you had to pass in skating?

A: I actually failed Novice moves in the field once. It's the only test I ever failed. I fell both times I took it, but the second time I re-skated the sequence and nailed it. I was intermediate and could do three triples but I couldn't do a counter!

from Farieha from Pakistan

Q: What is your favourite midnight snack!! Milk and cookies has chocolate plus sugar. Try it. Awesome for your diet!

A: Cereal.

from Janie

Q: Hey johnny you rock! what jump creeps you out the most? Janie :)

A: Triple loop. I hate it.

from Alaia

Q: Hey Johnny. I'm just curious- why Galina Zmievskaya? Why did you choose to start training with her, as opposed to with a different coach?

A: Galina has made two Olympic champions and been a very successful coach for a long time, why would I not take from her? I thought about many options, but Galina was the best one that would work.

from TT

Q:  What do you think about new Russian names in female skating - Ievleva, Doronina and Martynova?

A: I like Martynova the best. I think she looks beautiful on the ice, she improves every year and she is a fun girl. I really think she is Russia's next big hope.

from Taylor

Q: What do you think about when you go into a jump?

A: Fluffernutter.

from Bronwyn

Q: Johnny: Huge fan! Have you ever heard of or seen a program entitled "Lutz Chat"?

A: I have met the people from 'Lutz Chat.' They're insane in a good way. A fan recently sent me a youtube video of the show where they make fun of me and it was really funny.

from Em

Q: Hey Johnny I was just wondering if there is any "bad blood" between you and Evan since Nationals?

A: Of course not. He won fair and square.

from Pamela M.

Q: Hi Johnny, I don't know if you can answer this question or not - but I know you'll just ignore it if it's incorrect right now. I'm very troubled on why the federation has not covered your change of coaching on their "news" page. It's obviously BIG news, but nothing's been said at all. Somebody suggested to me they might not be happy that you switched to a Russian coach. I'm just hoping you can comment on this.

A: I actually asked them not to post a News story about the coaching change. I knew it would get around anyway, and I didn't want to put Priscilla through the fact that it'll be a big story. I sent in my updated bio information for them when I was ready and they put it up THAT DAY, so there was no hiding it or letting it slide under the radar. I didn't want a story, so there wasn't one. The federation did exactly what I asked.

from Morgan in Washington

Q: Hi Johnny. U are so awesome! I was wondering, how many coaches you have had since you started skating?

A: Galina Zmievskaya is my second full time coach.

from Jin Yeon Kim

Q: Have you ever met Caroline Zhang? What do you honestly think of her? What similarities, if any, do you find between yourself and her? Please be honest :)

A: I met her a few times. She's very young, and very capricious. She's already a little diva. Very demanding and knows what she wants. She always wears a backpack. I don't see any similarities aside from the fact we are figure skaters. She's two feet tall, ten and asian, I'm old, white and not two feet tall. HAHA I am impressed with her spins.

from Haylee

Q: What's the one thing that annoys you the most?

A: People who are fake.

from Marietta

Q: Johnny, I was just wondering how you feel about questions and comments being deleted from the Rising Star message board because they may offend you or may be critical of you. Do you approve or disapprove of this type of censorship?

A: I don't read message boards, but I hope the conversations would be nice. My message board is for my fans and what they want to discuss is their business. I don't really believe in censorship, but I think at times things need to be censored.

from Amanda

Q: What do you think about your good friend Irina Slutskaya's pregnancy? Do you know/like her husband?

A: I am happy for her. She's always talked about wanting a baby and now she'll have one. Her husband is friendly and misses her so much when she's away that I'm sure it's a loving and happy relationship.

from Margret

Q: Hey Johnny!! You are one amazing inspiration to me, in and out of skating.... So thank you, just for being you!!  I even met you once! I have a picture. But - to my question. What do you think of Michelle Kwan? And, how did you feel about her pulling out of the Olympics?? Thanks... Hugs!

A: I think she did what was right for her at the time and that it was smart. She made her own decision. I don't know Michelle like a best friend and I haven't seen her since Champions On Ice this year in Denver, but she is adjusting well to her new life in college. She yelled at me last year for not going to meet President Bush at the White House, so I didn't like that, but otherwise she's always been very cool.

from Ivy

Q: Hi Johnny, this is kind of a weird question... but I was wondering do you pay for your skating or do your parents pay for it?

A: I have supported my career since I was able to at 19. My parents can just sit back and enjoy now not worrying about paying for skating. It's taken care of.

from Haylee

Q: What's your most missed childhood memory?

A: Living in the country.
