Johnny has withdrawn from the 2010-11 season, issuing this letter to fans:

My dearest fans,

I would like to officially announce that I am withdrawing my name from the 2010-2011 competitive season. My decision comes after months of weighing the pros and cons of competing this season, and I have decided that I need a year to explore and reinvent myself as an athlete and artist. There are many projects that I’m currently working on and that I want to devote my time to, including my single, “Dirty Love,” my fashion line, “Be Unique,” and my quarter-century memoirs to be published with Gallery Books. I’m also working on television projects, and of course skating in shows around the world and producing my own skating spectacular.

I want to thank so many people: My mom, Patti; my coaches, Galina Yakovlevna Zmievskaya, Viktor Vassilievich Petrenko, and Nina Leonidovna Petrenko; my choreographer, David Wilson; my agent, Tara Modlin, and Fireworks Sports Marketing; and my friends, family, and most of all my fans. I skated for my fans this season, and I was able to skate because of them. They gave me inspiration every day in practice and helped in so many ways to get me back to the Olympics for the second time. I am forever in your debt.

The main reason for my decision is to have more time to reinvent my skating. I want to create a new skating image for myself so that when I return to competitive skating, I can perform in a way that is both unique and inspiring. I say all of this in hopes that I will return as a competitor for the 2011-2012 season.

At twenty-six years old, I have been competing at the highest level of the sport since 2000. Training and competing have been my only way of life for the past thirteen years. While it has been a magical journey, I feel that a brief hiatus will be truly beneficial to my skating and my future.

Although I’m taking a break from competitive skating, I still hope to be on the ice as often as possible, training and performing for my many fans around the world. I have even selected music for my next competitive programs and am already dreaming up costumes.

While my eyes are currently focused on many different projects, my brain will never forget about the Sochi Olympics in 2014. It would be a dream for me to compete in an Olympic Games in Russia, and I think one thing my fans know about me is that I don’t give up on a dream easily.

Thank you to everyone who has supported me. I hope to be performing for you very soon. I believe this is the right step for me to make in my career at this time, and I am very proud of everything I have accomplished so far in my life as a figure skater. Thank you.

- Johnny Weir

While his contemporaries may be dancing with stars, doing “family” ice shows or just trying to catch their breath after the Vancouver Winter Olympics, Johnny Weir is using his heightened celebrity status to get behind a diversified list of charities and causes. “It’s just what I was taught by my parents,” Weir says. “When you’re in a position to help people, you should do it,” he added.

It was announced today that Weir would host 88 for AIDS, a May 6th fundraiser to support AidsWalk New York and Team 119, the mental health clinic at GMHC. The classical piano concert and cocktail reception will be held in a spectacular Tribeca penthouse loft and will feature buff bartenders from modelbartenders.com pouring Ultimat Vodka cocktails. Tickets to the event are available at www.88forAIDS.com

Weir recently returned from Chicago where he starred in Cuties’ Ice Dreams with the city’s best 18 and under skaters, encouraging them to follow their dreams whatever they might be. This was followed by Figure Skating in Harlem, a New York City charitable event to support educational and athletic programs in Harlem where hundreds of underserved kids are privately tutored and taught to ice skate.

The skater has also committed to Ice Theatre of New York, a non-profit art theatre group that invited him to skate on April 29th because of his outstanding gift of artistry to the skating community and his ability to be daring. Mr. Weir has lent his support to nPLAY, a coalition of elite athletes from eight different sports, led by Boston Celtics forward Paul Pierce, whose goal is to raise funds to fight children’s obesity. On April 18th in Los Angeles, Weir will be honored by Equality California at a private reception recognizing his important message to young people about being who they are and feeling the freedom to express themselves.

Since the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, the “outspoken and outrageous” Weir has appeared on a plethora of TV talk shows from “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno” to “LIVE! With Regis & Kelly,” not to mention starring in his own reality series, “Be Good Johnny Weir,” on the Sundance channel. He is a three time national champion, two time Olympian and is currently in talks with potential sponsors to help produce his own ice spectacular. When asked to comment on his interest and dedication to charitable causes, Weir took a line from his realty show, “When I’m good, I’m very good…”

Johnny withdrew from the 2010 World Championships in Torino, Italy. He issued this statement:

"I want to thank everyone for the outpouring of love and support during the recent Olympic Games. The 2010 Olympics will be a memory that I will cherish for the rest of my life.  I feel that I skated two of the best performances of my career, making my coaches, my family and above all- myself very proud. But I would not have been able to skate the way I did without the encouragement of my fans worldwide.

And while I am still embracing my Olympic memories and have the momentum to move forward, I have decided that it is not advantageous at this time for me to partake in the World Championships in Torino, Italy.  After my sixth place finish in Vancouver, I believe that I must take time to reassess my strategies and goals.  While I understand the importance of competition, I feel that a short break at this time would be personally beneficial to me. I know all may not share my stance, but I can assure everyone that I will be re-energized after I’ve had time to rework my technique. I want to be a better competitor and win medals for my country and I hope everyone can respect my decision to take this time off.

Once again, I want to thank everyone who supported me this season.  Specifically, I would like to thank my coaches Galina Zmievskaya, Viktor Petrenko, Nina Petrenko, Priscilla Hill and David Wilson for helping me make my Olympic dreams a reality.  I would also like to thank my family and friends for their never- ending support. Finally, I want my fans to know that I love them and I work every day to make them proud. I will continue to work hard and I hope my work for next season will be the most exciting of my career."

Johnny has decided to take down his official MySpace site, effective immediately, because of problems with content submitted to Johnny through the page, as well as his limited time to personally log on to MySpace. Any profiles claiming to be Johnny are not authorized by him. He said:

"I wanted to inform everyone that there is no longer an official Johnny Weir MySpace. I really wanted a way to be closer to my fans and friends but it seems to have turned on me. I worked very hard on the site with the assistance of my good friend Lena. I am completely terrible with computers so I would personally check the site once or twice a month if I could, and Lena took care of it for the rest of the time.

At the end of each month she would send me printed letters and details from my MySpace account. There have been an alarming amount of mean spirited, hateful and threatening letters sent to me through MySpace and I decided it would be best to close the account. It is a shame that the site had to close and I wish so many people weren't cruel, but it's life.

Thank you to everyone who befriended me on MySpace especially the Johnny Weir fan groups such as Joya Group, Weird Iced French Kiss and Johnny's Korean Angels. Please be advised that there will be no more attempts from me to have a MySpace, so anything on MySpace now is fake. Thank you."

Due to new policies within my federation, I am unable to perform. Everyone tried their best to get me to Moscow, but it isn't fair to treat me differently than the other skaters on the US team. I am very sorry to all of my fans who have bought tickets to the show. I wish I could perform for you, but I suppose we will have to wait. Thank you for your support and for supporting Tatiana Anatolievna's show. Please enjoy the show and wish Tatiana Anatolievna a happy birthday from me. I will be in Russia as soon as I can to perform for you all. Spasibo, spasibo, spasibo!

Here is a recent Press Release from Geoffrey B. Small that mentions Johnny.

January 18, 2006
Johnny sends news of his decision to go back to last year's free program as well as info about his new role as spokesperson for Geoffrey B. Small designs.  He writes:

First, I am changing my free program.  I am going back to "Otonal."  I watched the video of my free program from Saint Louis and although I landed all my jumps, I had no connection to the audience or music.  I was bored watching myself.  Priscilla and I updated "Otonal" today and yesterday and I think it will be ready for Turin.  I am also getting a new costume.
On another note, I will be a spokesperson for Geoffrey B. Small designs.  He is an avant garde fashion designer in Italy and he shows his collections in Paris and Milano...  I am not sure exactly what direction my relationship with the designer will take, but I am proud to be part of such a revolutionary designers work.

Johnny wins Gold in St. Louis and is named to the U.S. Olympic Team!  He heads to next month's Winter Olympic Games in Torino, Italy as the three-time U.S. National Champion.  In the Free Skate he received a Technical Element Score of 63.36, a Program Component Score of 78.70, and a Total Segment Score of 142.06.  His total score for the competition was 225.34.  Click below for the full results.

USFSA:  Free Skate / Overall Results / Recap           “Being a third time national champion is really an awesome feat,” Weir said. “I wasn’t quite sure how I would achieve that after the year I have had so far. I am really, really proud that I could win again, but the program today definitely wasn’t up to par with my previous two wins. There was a lot that I could have done better, but this was by far the hardest year for me to compete, especially after having such a strong lead in the short and not letting that get to my head. I just wanted to relax and get into the program, which I did pretty well, considering it was an Olympic year and coming back as reigning U.S. champion and all these other things that went on as opposed to just skating today. I am very proud that I got through it as well as I did, even if it wasn’t the best that I could do.”

Johnny is in 1st place after the Men's Short Program at the State Farm U.S. Figure Skating Championships.  He received a Technical Element Score of 43.64, a Program Component Score of 39.64, and a Total Segment Score of 83.28.  Click below for results and recap of the Men's competition:

“I am very, very, very excited with how today went,” Weir said. “With the way practice is going I thought I could skate well, but not as well as I did. To score over 80 points is my new personal best. I am just very elated right now, so thrilled with how I came out. It was lovely, really. It’s me, so I skate however well it is going to go that day, and I never can predict anything.  But, I trained well.  I trained well coming into this event and no matter how bad or nervous I am feeling, I can still deliver a strong performance.”

Johnny won the Marshalls U.S. Figure Skating Challenge! Click below for details:

USFSA:  Kwan, Weir Win the Fans' Vote at Marshalls Challenge
With elegance, style and smooth transitions, as well as some unusual spins, Weir won a solid 64 percent of the vote in the final round, to Weiss' 36 percent. Weir was also the pick of the judges.
Weir seemed a little surprised with the results.
“I still don't think of myself as being popular,” he said. “I'm definitely not on the same scale as Sasha, or Michelle, or Kurt Browning. But it's really, really satisfying to know that people support me, and they push me forward, and it shows today. I mean I fell down and I still won the first round.”

USFSA:  Athletes Meet the Press at Marshalls Challenge
Johnny Weir is up next, wearing torn jeans, a cream sweater, and Ugg boots.
“Ugg boots are so out, but they're warm,” Weir explained.
He talked a lot about his rough autumn, and that he never felt right. Now, he says, he's on the rebound. He said he doesn't regret dumping his “Liebestraum” program but has struggled with his current one because judges who reviewed the program told him it was too easy and would only receive level ones. He also blamed part of the problem on a cursed outfit.
“That (long program) costume is dead. Three strikes and you are out.”
Asked what one does with a dead costume, Weir said he rolled it into a ball, wrapped it in plastic, and gave it to his costume designer to deal with. A lot of the beading can be salvaged to live again on a new outfit.

ISU:  St. Petersburg (RUS) Day 2
Weir’s program to three pieces of music by Maksim Mrvica, “Amazonic”, “Hana’s Eyes” and “Wonderland” featured a triple Axel-triple toeloop combination and four more good triple jumps as well as fast spins with interesting positions. However, the 21-year-old singled his second Axel and doubled the Lutz. The U.S. Champion received 131.64 points (57.94/73.70) and picked up a total score of 206.79 points.
Today was an improvement over Skate Canada and the invitational events from the beginning of the season, and I’m very proud of that. I definitely can do much better than I did today, but as I have been told, it’s kind of good to start a little bit slowly in the Olympic season, so you can have more power in the end”, Weir said.

Johnny placed 3rd in the Men's Short Program at Cup of Russia with a Technical Element Score of 37.60, a Program Component Score of 37.55, and a Total Segment Score of 75.15. Links:

ISU:  St. Petersburg (RUS) Day 1
Weir opened his expressive program to “The Swan” by Camille Saint-Saens with a nice triple Axel followed by a triple Lutz-triple toe combination, He also completed well centered spins showing interesting positions, but he two-footed his triple flip. The U.S. Champion received 75.15 points (37.60/37.55).
Today was a definite improvement from Skate Canada. I had a really rough time there. I was very happy to go out and have a decent performance today and not fall apart the way I did in Canada and not be injured and feel good while I’m skating. I’m really happy that I scored a 75, and it’s not far from my personal best, and I made a mistake tonight. If I do skate clean, maybe I’ll break 76 or 77. For today, I’m very excited and I’m really looking forward to putting out my best in the free program for the first time in this season”, Weir explained.
