{"id":11457,"date":"2018-05-18T08:48:09","date_gmt":"2018-05-18T12:48:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/figureskatersonline.com\/news\/?p=11457"},"modified":"2018-06-28T06:58:53","modified_gmt":"2018-06-28T10:58:53","slug":"maia-and-alex-shibutani-looking-ahead-to-new-off-ice-opportunities-as-the-2018-stars-on-ice-tour-ends","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/figureskatersonline.com\/news\/2018\/05\/18\/maia-and-alex-shibutani-looking-ahead-to-new-off-ice-opportunities-as-the-2018-stars-on-ice-tour-ends\/","title":{"rendered":"Maia and Alex Shibutani looking ahead to new off-ice opportunities as the 2018 Stars on Ice tour ends"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">By Maura Sullivan Hill, FSO staff writer<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">CHICAGO, IL&#8211;Maia and Alex Shibutani haven\u2019t been home to Michigan in almost a month.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">They\u2019re spending the weekends performing on the 22-city U.S. <em>Stars on Ice<\/em>\u00a0(SOI) tour, and during the week they\u2019re traveling from coast to coast for off-ice projects, attending Oscar parties in LA, media appearances in New York City, and meetings at YouTube headquarters in San Francisco. It\u2019s safe to say they haven\u2019t had much time to relax since claiming an individual and team bronze medal at the 2018 Olympics in South Korea in February, but the ice dancers are savoring every moment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><a href=\"http:\/\/figureskatersonline.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/IMG_4486.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-11467\" src=\"http:\/\/figureskatersonline.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/IMG_4486-300x245.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"327\" srcset=\"https:\/\/figureskatersonline.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/IMG_4486-300x245.jpg 300w, https:\/\/figureskatersonline.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/IMG_4486-768x627.jpg 768w, https:\/\/figureskatersonline.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/IMG_4486-135x110.jpg 135w, https:\/\/figureskatersonline.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/IMG_4486-86x70.jpg 86w, https:\/\/figureskatersonline.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/IMG_4486-370x302.jpg 370w, https:\/\/figureskatersonline.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/IMG_4486-541x442.jpg 541w, https:\/\/figureskatersonline.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/IMG_4486.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cRegardless of your level of experience, at the Olympic Games, it\u2019s one of those \u2018everything comes down to this\u2019 type of moments, and I think we would have been na\u00efve to not have the perspective of what an Olympic medal means. We\u2019re very accomplished and experienced when it comes to our international track record, and it has all been built towards getting those Olympic medals. We knew what it meant to us, and that\u2019s why we put so much of our time and so much effort into our preparation,\u201d Alex said while getting ready for the Chicago SOI show at Allstate Arena. \u201cIt\u2019s what been pushing us for the past four years, especially, following our first Olympic experience in Sochi. There hasn\u2019t been a lot of time to reflect, given our schedule, but every minute, we\u2019re grateful that we were able to experience what we did at the Games and that we skated our very best.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The Shibutanis announced in April that they will take the 2018-2019 season off from competition, but that doesn\u2019t mean they have any plans to slow down. After <em>Stars on Ice<\/em> wraps up at the end of May, they are scheduled to perform in shows in June in Japan as well as star in the July 4th ice show in Sun Valley, Idaho.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In April, the duo signed with Hollywood talent agency UTA, and though they said it was too early to talk specifically about their off-ice plans for the coming year, they said they are excited about what is in store.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">With a following of more than 150,000 fans on their YouTube channel and nearly 200,000 on their joint Instagram account, it is a safe bet that some of those new projects will showcase their video and social media skills. They will be making an appearance for the first time as featured creators, June 20-23, at YouTube\u2019s VidCon, an annual conference for the online video community.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Until then, they\u2019ll be on the road with <em>Stars on Ice<\/em>. Both Maia and Alex said the crowd and fan response on this year\u2019s tour has been gratifying.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cIt\u2019s been really special that we\u2019ve had the opportunity to tour with <em>Stars on Ice<\/em>. The amount of enthusiasm that we, and the entire cast, have received, there is just so much excitement. I think that the Winter Olympics this year really resonated, so to have that celebration continue, even though we are over two months removed, is amazing,\u201d Maia said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThere are so many people that we\u2019ve met at all the various shows, who traveled from much further to make it to the shows, which is a great feeling, because we are always talking about how, collectively as a sport, we wish that there were more people that were actively involved in following the sport during non-Olympic years,\u201d Alex added. \u201cI think that there was a lot of good momentum built up during the Games. It\u2019s not just limited to the tour. Whenever we\u2019re out and about, even in major cities, the recognition that we get and the support has been awesome.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The duo were also finalists for the James E. Sullivan Award, which the Amateur Athletic Union presents annually to the nation\u2019s best amateur athlete, in recognition of their impact both on and off the ice.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cIt was a huge honor for us to be finalists for the Sullivan Award, which obviously has so much great history,\u201d Maia said. \u201cThe qualities that the Sullivan Award celebrates, it goes beyond what we all do in the field of sports.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/figureskatersonline.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/08A7255.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-11463\" src=\"http:\/\/figureskatersonline.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/08A7255-210x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"429\" srcset=\"https:\/\/figureskatersonline.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/08A7255-210x300.jpg 210w, https:\/\/figureskatersonline.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/08A7255-77x110.jpg 77w, https:\/\/figureskatersonline.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/08A7255-49x70.jpg 49w, https:\/\/figureskatersonline.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/08A7255-245x350.jpg 245w, https:\/\/figureskatersonline.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/08A7255-309x442.jpg 309w, https:\/\/figureskatersonline.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/08A7255.jpg 700w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Both Shibutanis spoke about using the platform that the Olympic attention has given them to give back to causes they care about.
