American teams grabbed the gold medal on home ice in both the pairs and ice dance events.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dance<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In the dance competition, reigning World silver medalists and U.S. champions Madison Hubbell and Zachary Donohue took a commanding 10.5-point lead in the rhythm dance (formerly the short dance) and did not relinquish it. They earned level four for their twizzle sequence and a stunning final curve lift in the rhythm dance. Their \u201cRomeo and Juliet\u201d free dance has an airy, romantic feel that is in sharp contrast to the tension in their bluesy free dance from last season. Getting the protocol back and seeing how the judges responded is really helpful going into the Grand Prix Series,\u201d Hubbell said. \u201cWe are proud of ourselves that after a tough season and a long tour (Stars on Ice), we have pushed ourselves to be ready by this competition again. We are really excited for this year.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Fellow Americans Christina Carriera and Anthony Ponomarenko, last season\u2019s World junior silver Medalists and U.S. Junior Champions, set two new personal bests in the rhythm dance and free dance en route to their silver medal performance, with impressive speed and twizzles. This event was their senior international debut. They came back strong on the jumps in the free skate, landing side-by-side triple loops and a triple salchow-double toe-double loop combo. On the throw lutz, Cain fought and hung on to the landing, despite landing low in the knee.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWe\u2019re very pleased [with our performance]. It\u2019s been a really fun competition,\u201d LeDuc said. \u201cIt\u2019s always so fun competing in the United States. It\u2019s early in the season, but we still feel good about what we put out there. We fought really hard for everything.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">Audrey Lu and Misha Mitrofanov earned the silver medal in their senior international debut. The 2018 U.S. Junior Champions overcame a nerve-wracking stumble on a lift midway through their long program. I\u2019m glad we were able to be safe and keep on going,\u201d Mitrofanov said. \u201cIt gives us pride that we were able to work hard enough to achieve a medal at an international event, but we understand that if we want the gold medal we have to work harder.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Australian pair <\/span><span class=\"s2\">Ekaterina Alexandrovskaya and Harley Windsor, the 2017 World Junior Champions, took the bronze in Salt Lake City with a level three triple twist and two solid lifts. His \u201cLa La Land\u201d long program showcased a warmth and theatricality alongside the two quads and three other triples.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">Michal Brezina of the Czech Republic started his tenth senior international season with a silver medal. Technically speaking, everything felt solid. During the program, I didn\u2019t feel that I was searching for energy at the end, which is good, considering the altitude [in Salt Lake City],\u201d Ma said. \u201cThe little things add up though. I\u2019ve been really working on things like my edges and my spins, and now I know that I need to work on them a little bit more. It\u2019s an honor [to earn the bronze medal].\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s1\">2018 Olympian Vincent Zhou of the United States rebounded from a tough short program to win the long program and pull up to fourth place overall. In the short, a fall on his opening quad lutz set the tone for a tough outing, where he also doubled an intended quad salchow and popped his triple axel, despite having level fours on his spins and step sequences. While he got called for some underrotations and the wrong edge on his flip in the long, two quad attempts, six triples, and another level four step sequence topped the field in that segment.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cEvery competition is a learning experience. Whether it\u2019s good or bad, there\u2019s always something to learn,\u201d Zhou said. \u201cObviously, this is just the start of my season. I\u2019ve had a difficult summer but have been battling through. I\u2019m really happy to be here competing and skating. Today I was able to skate for myself and enjoy my time out on the ice.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ladies<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"http:\/\/figureskatersonline.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/IMG_1836.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-11990\" src=\"http:\/\/figureskatersonline.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/IMG_1836-240x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"438\" srcset=\"https:\/\/figureskatersonline.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/IMG_1836-240x300.jpg 240w, https:\/\/figureskatersonline.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/IMG_1836-768x960.jpg 768w, https:\/\/figureskatersonline.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/IMG_1836-88x110.jpg 88w, https:\/\/figureskatersonline.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/IMG_1836-56x70.jpg 56w, https:\/\/figureskatersonline.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/IMG_1836-280x350.jpg 280w, https:\/\/figureskatersonline.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/IMG_1836-354x442.jpg 354w, https:\/\/figureskatersonline.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/IMG_1836.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\" \/><\/a>Two-time World medalist Satoko Miyahara of Japan won her third consecutive U.S. International Classic title in Salt Lake City in the ladies event, and she shared the podium with two skaters from the Republic of Korea, <\/span><span class=\"s2\">Eunsoo Lim and Yelim Kim, who won silver and bronze, respectively.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">Miyahara had two underrotation calls in the short program, but no such problems in the long, where she put down a six-triple program, including a triple flip-double toe-double loop and a double axel-triple toe combo late in the program.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">Lim, who won the Asian Open Trophy Challenger Series event in her senior debut in August, continued her strong start to the season, landing triple lutz-triple toe combinations in both segments of the competition.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">Courtney Hicks, who now trains with Kori Ade in Colorado, was the top American lady, in seventh place. Hicks was on track for a clean program when she doubled her final triple flip and triple lutz attempts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cI\u2019m happy with my [free skate]. At the end I did the two doubles because I was [tired], but I was really happy to open the season here,\u201d Hicks said. \u201cThe past couple of weeks have been really odd because I got a brand new short program and I was having some problems with jumps that were unnecessary. It was nice to get here and figure things out.
